Horseback Rides for Beginners: How Our Guides Help You

The horseback rides we offer about 15 minutes from the West Gate of Yellowstone National Park provide a beautiful mountain trail ride for both beginners and experts. When you arrive, our guides will help you feel as comfortable as possible, whether you’ve never touched a horse before or ride horses frequently.

First, they will match you with a horse that will give you the best riding experience possible. These horses are trained specifically for guided horseback rides and know the trails well. They have gentle temperaments, perfect for those who have never ridden before. In general, they are really good about following your guide, so you don’t have to worry about having a horse that’s hard to handle.

Our guides help you up onto the horse and make sure the saddle is all secure. They will give you the rundown of what you should do to control the horse. If you have any questions or concerns about your horse or the trail ride, your guide will be there to answer you.

All riders should arrive 30 minutes early to their ride to allow time for our guides to match each person to a horse, help you mount, and give you instructions.

Horseback Trail Ride Through Gallatin National Forest

Riding horseback through the Gallatin National Forest is truly unforgettable. Although the ranch itself has wide open stretches of fields and meadows in the valley, we enter the serene canopy of pine within minutes of your horseback ride.

Every trail we take for our horseback rides are through the Gallatin National Forest. You’ll be passing through protected forests and landscapes, making it a truly outback experience.

Your horse will carry you through the calming groves of pine and aspen. The rich greens against the blue sky make for amazing photo opportunities.

The trees part for meadows climbing up the mountainside, with wildflowers blooming from May through August. These yellow, purple, and blue blossoms add another miraculous detail to the beauty of Gallatin National Forest.

At the top of the ridge, you’re presented with a panoramic picture of the forest, meadows, valley below, and mountains in the distance.

Throughout the ride, your guide will always be right there to assist if you need help with anything. Because of their experience on the trails, they will give you tips and reminders throughout the trail ride to help you control your horse, stay safe, and have a wonderful experience.

High Country Trail Rides with Incredible Views

This isn’t any ordinary horseback ride. These are true, high country trail rides. You can reach out and brush the branches of the trees with your fingertips. You can feel the cool, mountain air on your face and the warmth of the sun on your back. Instead of flat, straight trails, your horse will carry you on winding trails through the woods and crest ridges and vistas that will leave you in awe.

The Gallatin National Forest rises to 8,000 feet in elevation. You are totally immersed in nature and backcountry forest as you ride. The rugged trails carry you up to outlooks that give you gorgeous views of thick pine and aspen woods, rolling meadows, and the sweeping valley below. At some points, you can even catch a glimpse of the mountain ranges in the distance.

And what better way to feel like you’re part of it all than to be on the back of a horse? Moving at a gentle pace, you can fully soak in the scenery. We often spot a bear or moose on our rides as well, though wildlife is unpredictable so we can’t guarantee a sighting.
